대체로 새로운 시티 호텔이라는 것은 오래된 옛날 건물이나 숨어 있던 고즈넉한 부띠크에 모던한 실내 장식을 억지로 넣어놓은 형식에 만족하고 있습니다만, Sofitel Water Tower는 조금 다릅니다. 건축사 Jean-Paul Viguier는 건축물 시작부터 착수할 수 있었기 때문에, 온 세상이 마치 거대한 쇄빙선이 시카고 전체를 찢어놓을 것 같은 선명한 흰색 쐐기형 건물로 인상에 남을 것입니다.
역상이 된 쐐기형 건물은 외관만으로도 충분히 매력적입니다만, 안쪽에도 영향을 주고 있습니다. 쐐기형 바닥 부분인 객실 창에서는 앞으로 내밀듯 아래를 내려다 볼 수 있어 거리를 바로 위에서 내려다 볼 수 있습니다.
물론, 체인 호텔 중에는 시시한 인테리어나 의미없는 가구들을 바라보는 것보다도 창문의 경치가 낫다고 할 곳도 있겠지요. 아시는 대로 소피텔은 체인 호텔입니다만, 근처의 체인 호텔보다 디자인이 중시되었다는 점에서 조금 다릅니다. 객실에는 Mies van der Rohe의 바르셀로나 체어를 사용하고, 레스토랑 hotel bistro와 카페인Café des Architectes 에서는 시카고의 건축과 디자인 관계의 책을 모아둔 도서관을 둘 정도입니다.
